Training Camp Notebook 8/1: Depth beginning to reveal itself

The Las Vegas Raiders took off the pads for a day as they prepare for their mock game at Allegiant Stadium this Saturday afternoon.

While Friday's practice was open to the general public, there were also a few special guest appearances on the field. Former defensive line coach Rod Marinelli was in his element near Maxx Crosby and the position group. Seven-time Super Bowl champion and team minority owner Tom Brady also scanned the field, catching up with the current roster and front office staff.

Here are a few notes, quotes and observations from the eighth training camp practice.

Notes and Observations from Day 8 of practice

Offense

  • Tight ends Michael Mayer, Ian Thomas and Carter Runyon enjoyed another productive day of practice. Runyon and Thomas had a few big gains with Mayer catching another touchdown in 7-on-7 drills.
  • Jakobi Meyers had the catch of the day, connecting with Geno Smith by the back left corner of the end zone in 7-on-7 period. Smith placed the ball on the money for his receiver, with No. 16 leaping over his defender and toe dragging his feet to hit paydirt.
  • Young players fighting for jobs were constantly worked in throughout practice to show their coaches and teammates what they're capable of. Among those who impressed me with their allotted reps were sixth-round pick Cam Miller under center, along with Chris Collier and offensive linemen Dalton Wagner and Will Putnam.
  • While on the topic of offensive line, the first-team lineup switched up again in team period. At the moment, it seems there is a full battle at the center and right guard spots between Meredith, Cappa, Jackson Powers-Johnson and Thayer Munford Jr.
  • "Everybody's got to compete. Every position is a competition," Cappa said earlier this week. "It doesn't matter what position you are, they're going to play the best guy. There's always competition. But working with the young guys is what I like the most honestly. I love passing along what I've learned, trying to help them. We've got good young players on the O-line, and it's been cool seeing them grow already."

Defense

  • Devin White had a would've been sack and continues to look the part at SAM linebacker next to Elandon Roberts.
  • While talking to former Raiders linebacker Kirk Morrison at practice, he noted his excitement at Jamal Adams playing "position-less football" since arriving in Las Vegas. That's been showcased all of camp, but especially over the last few days. Carroll mentioned the safety was moving over to linebacker and he's been lining up everywhere on the field – from in the box, at the line of scrimmage and even at nickel cornerback on a few occasions.
  • "It's fun to be with Adams to be honest," Germaine Pratt said after practice. "Unique individual, special individual, guy that still loves football. He had an injury, but it doesn't look like he had an injury to me. Guy's flying around and attacking."
  • Like on the offensive side of the ball, a lot of younger players saw reps on defense Friday, including USC teammates John Humphrey and Greedy Vance as well as linebacker Matt Jones.

Special Teams

  • Daniel Carlson was automatic on some pretty long field goals during special teams period.
  • Phillip Dorsett got some kick and punt return work. The speedster has 12 career receiving touchdowns.

Quote of the day

To be able to come to work and see a guy that loves what he do, it then brings more out of you." Germaine Pratt on Pete Carroll
