Training Camp Notebook 7/23: Young guys prepared to compete

With Pete Carroll steering the ship, the Las Vegas Raiders training camp is officially underway.

The Silver and Black conducted their first practice back at Intermountain Health Performance Center with a supportive crowd in attendance to see the the revamped Raiders roster heading into the 2025 season. Obviously there's still ways to go before the first preseason game, but the team seemed to be efficient with their time Wednesday morning.

Here are some highlights, notes and quotes that describe the first camp practice of 2025.

Notes and Observations from Day 1 of practice

Offense

  • Rookie Ashton Jeanty is certainly being positioned to be the lead back in this offense, continuing to take first-team reps as he did in OTAs in minicamp. He impressed Wednesday morning, but not as a rusher. He caught several screens throughout the day, churning some for a gain. It seems the main objective is getting the first-round pick the football in open space.
  • "Ashton is a smooth running back out of the backfield," Geno Smith said. "We've seen what he can do against contact and breaking tackles. The thing that really impresses me is his ability to catch out of the backfield. He's a real natural in that aspect."
  • Geno Smith found tight end Ian Thomas in the middle of the end zone for a touchdown in 7-on-7 drills. The Raiders offense continued to mix in 12 & 13 personnel packages as they did in OTAs, consisting of Thomas, Brock Bowers and Michael Mayer.
  • "The tight end group has been really impressive," Pete Carroll said Tuesday before camp began. "We know what Brock can do. Michael Mayer had a great off season with us, and Ian had a terrific offseason with us."
  • Smith could've had another touchdown in team period, but missed rookie Dont'e Thornton Jr. on a deep ball. Regardless of the miscalculation, it was optimistic seeing Smith continue looking for the fourth-rounder consistently, who was seemingly a top target earlier this offseason.
  • "Repetition is always going to be the thing for me," Smith said. "The more we can get in the classroom together and I can talk to these guys and help them see what I seeing ... and then just getting out on the field. We're going through it out on the field, getting all the reps that we can. Getting reps after practice, just doing all the extra little things that we can do to get better and get those guys up to speed."

Defense

  • As the defense is trying to ramp up the speed, their cohesion as a unit is still evident. Linebackers Devin White and Elandon Roberts saw a lot of reps and were constantly communicating from the front and the back end.
  • The play of the day came from cornerback Sam Webb, making a nearly perfect read on the outside receiver. He would've secured an interception, but dropped the football. Nevertheless, the play was still worthy of celebration from his teammates.
  • An interesting observation is who the Raiders have continued lining up at cornerback. Jakorian Bennett was on one side, which isn't surprising considering his 2024 production, but on the other side remains rookie Darien Porter. The Iowa State product saw some first-team reps in spurts of OTA practices and continued to see some shine with the unit during the first training camp practice.
  • "He met expectations for what we had hoped we would see," Carroll previously said of Porter. "He's got tremendous speed. He's got a natural sense about him as an athlete. He was a receiver, and you could see that he's got receiving skills. ... So, he'll have his opportunity to show. He's going to get a lot of work and we're going to try to wear him out so that he gains as much as he can as fast."
  • The Raiders signed former Pro Bowler Jamal Adams on Tuesday, placing him in a promising safety room with Jeremy Chinn, Isaiah Pola-Mao and Lonnie Johnson Jr.
  • "He's one of Pete's guys, so just his ability to affect the game in different ways from close to the line of scrimmage to really just flying all around the ball," Chinn said of what Adams brings to the Raiders.

Quote of the day

"We've got to be delusional enough to believe in what we can truly do. That's the only way you can go out there and win." Maxx Crosby
